Ohio State University makes its popular Swift coding and application development certificate program available to the public. By expanding access to students from all over, participants acquire cutting-edge skills for today’s modern economy.
In addition, the university is working with local companies to provide workforce development opportunities to its employees through the Ohio TechCred program.
In just over a year since it was launched, more than 3,000 students, faculty, staff and alumni have enrolled in the certificate program, completing stand-alone modules according to their schedule and developing valuable skills. This new public set of courses expands the opportunity for anyone interested in learning how to code and build apps that are ready for the App Store.
Horizon Two Labs, a Columbus-based risk study that helps launch, develop and operate technology startups, supported enrolling its employees in the courses. Technology chief Zak Dziczkowski said the courses help build the Horizon Two team’s knowledge base.
“The goal of Horizon Two Labs is to bring great new ideas to life. The ability to build and iterate quickly and effectively on new ideas is a necessity at this early stage. We build a lot of consumer-oriented products and the Ohio State Swift Coding course helps build our team’s skills, ”he said. “Our whole team strives to be polyglot. This requires constant learning and training on all aspects of the business. “
The four-course series is designed to make it easier for participants to learn how to code and develop applications with Swift, Apple’s open source programming language. They also leave with a number of stackable certificates and real-world skills.
“This coding and application development certification program allows anyone, regardless of their training or prior coding knowledge, to learn a tangible and applicable digital skill that will not only provide them with immediate skills to use and explore, but also a basis for future learning, innovation and creativity in the digital world, ”said Cory Tressler, director of learning programs and Digital Flagship.
The self-paced curriculum allows participants to move through the lessons according to their schedule, speed up what’s to come easily, and spend more time in the areas they want to develop. The courses are completely online, so you can access the lessons and complete them from anywhere. The courses are based on Apple’s coding curriculum and its development tool, Xcode, which are used by both students and professional developers to create applications for Apple platforms. Xcode is available as a free download for Mac.
Once participants have completed the courses, they will be able to acquire their new skills and continue to complete Apple application development with Swift certification as a complement to their Ohio State credential.
Ohio’s TechCred program offers employers the opportunity to improve current and future employees in today’s technology-driven economy. Employers can apply for reimbursement of up to $ 2,000 when current or future employees complete Ohio State courses.
