Matt Harvey accepts a minor league contract with the Baltimore Orioles

BALTIMORE – Matt Harvey will try to revive his career with the Baltimore Orioles.

The 31-year-old right-hander agreed a minor league contract with the Orioles on Saturday. He would get a one-million-dollar one-year contract if he was added to the 40-man list and would have the chance to get performance bonuses.

Harvey was 0-3 with an effectiveness of 11.57 in four outings and three appearances in relief for the Kansas City Royals in 2020. His fastball averaged 94.5 mph, below the 2013 mph.

All-Star with the New York Mets in 2013, Harvey’s career was derailed by Tommy John’s surgery in October 2013 and an operation to correct thoracic output syndrome in 2016.

Harvey went from 34 to 37 with an ERA of 3.66 for the Mets from 2012 until he was traded to Cincinnati in May 2018. He went to the Los Angeles Angels in 2019 and the Royals in 2020, and has 44- 52 with an ERA of 4.14 to 144 starts and eight appearances in relief for his career.

He will try to win a job in a rotation led by All-Star John Means. Former stars Felix Hernandez and Wade LeBlanc will also be in the Orioles’ spring training with minor league contracts, and debutants Dean Kremer and Keegan Akin also count on competing.
