According to the CDC, the Food and Drug Administration and state officials, these cheeses are a likely source of an outbreak that put seven people in hospital in Connecticut, Maryland, New York and Virginia.
“People who are no longer at risk for serious illness should make sure that fresh, soft Hispanic-style cheeses (such as fresh cheese) they eat have labels that say ‘Made with pasteurized milk,'” he said. said the CDC in a press release Friday.
People at higher risk for serious listeria diseases, such as pregnant women or those over 65, should avoid these cheese products, according to the CDC.
“Don’t eat fresh, soft Hispanic-style cheeses (such as queso fresco, queso blanco, and queso panela) until we identify a specific type or brand that makes you sick,” the agency said.
Listeria can cause common symptoms of food poisoning such as nausea and diarrhea.
“Pregnant people often experience fever, fatigue, and muscle aches. However, Listeria infection during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth, or life-threatening infection of the newborn,” the CDC said.
“People who are not pregnant may experience headaches, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and seizures, in addition to fever and muscle aches,” the CDC said.
“Contact your doctor immediately if you have symptoms of severe Listeria disease after eating fresh, soft Hispanic cheeses.”
