She went viral to use the powerful Gorilla Glue, an industrial-strength adhesive, on her hair when she ran out of a product called Got2b Glued For more than a month, Brown’s hair remained stuck to her scalp.
The Beverly Hills-based plastic surgeon, Dr. Michael K. Obeng, empathized after learning of his story.
“I saw how much pain he can suffer,” Dr. Obeng said. “And after talking to her, I realized I needed help.”
He started working on a solution that was safe and effective. Brown flew to Los Angeles from New Orleans. The hours-long procedure conducted on a professional basis through Obeng’s nonprofit organization, Restore, worked.
“I was very ecstatic to be able to smile on someone’s face to eliminate the pain and suffering in my head,” Obeng said.
Brown can finally run his fingers through his hair again.
“It was a month, but it seemed like years to me,” Brown told our sister network KABC-TV.
“I have a happy dance,” said a smiling Brown.
But she admits the condemnatory and ridiculous comments were painful for her and her family.
“” She ‘s so stupid. It was nonsense, ”you know,“ You should cut your whole head off, ”he said of the comments on social media.
One of his children was harassed.
“Someone invented a song,” Brown said. “But instead of saying, ‘Don’t worry about what people say,’ I was in the bathroom crying because I’m reading all these comments … People have to understand that you can’t knock someone down when you’re already so low.”
Brown, a mother of five who runs a daycare and dance team, had support. Her video sparked a conversation about the hairstyle challenges many black women experience due to Eurocentric beauty standards.
Others simply let him know they were rooting for him. She said she planned to respond individually to all people who contacted her.
“If it takes a month, three months, I’ll thank everyone on my inbox,” Brown said.
She had regretted posting the video, but now she is relieved because it helped her find a solution.
“All the negative everyone was saying, I don’t even care. I have my hair here, the glue is gone,” he said.
