Cassidy’s decision came as a surprise to some after being seen Friday with one statement this showed support for Trump’s acquittal, but his communications director claimed Cassidy had drafted two statements, one for and against Trump’s conviction.

Cassidy has said earlier that House administrators “did very well” with their arguments for Trump’s guilt.

However, the arguments fell short, as the conviction would have forced 17 Republicans to side with Democrats.

Because Trump was not convicted, he is allowed to run for political office again. He has made it clear that he will remain involved in the political arena, but it is unclear what his future plans are with the Republican party.
