Sen. Lindsey Graham predicted Sunday that Republican Party votes to convict former President Trump in his Senate impeachment trial will give a shot to his daughter-in-law Lara Trump in the North Carolina Senate race.
“The biggest winner of all this impeachment trial is Lara Trump,” Graham of South Carolina told Fox News Sunday.
“My dear friend Richard Burr, with whom I like and have been friends for a long time, has just made Lara Trump almost the nominee for the Senate seat in North Carolina to replace him if he shows up. and I’m sure I’ll be behind it because it represents the future of the Republican party, ”he said.
Burr, who has said he will not seek re-election in 2022, was among seven Republican senators who voted with Democrats to condemn Trump for assaulting his supporters on Jan. 6 to storm the Capitol.
But the 57-43 vote fell short because 67 senators are needed to condemn.
“The evidence is compelling that President Trump is guilty of inciting insurgency against an egalitarian branch of government and that the charge rises to the level of high crime and misdemeanors,” Burr said in a statement Saturday. “So I voted to condemn.”
Lara Trump, the wife of former President Eric Trump’s son, is reportedly rumored to be entering the race in North Carolina in 2022.
He was born in Wilmington, North Carolina, and graduated from North Carolina State University.
Trump, 38, was a replacement for his father-in-law’s 2016 and 2020 presidential campaigns.
A December poll on the 2022 race in North Carolina shows Lara Trump would be one of the first in Republican primaries.
Former Gov. Pat McCrory led between 24 and 23 percent of Republican and Republican voters, according to the BUSR / UNLV Lee Business School poll, but 39 percent were undecided.
