The announcement of Meghan Markle’s pregnancy came exactly 37 years after British newspapers announced that Princess Diana was expecting Prince Harry.
The Duke and Duchess said they were “delighted to be expecting their second child” in an announcement on Valentine’s Day, the same day the UK newspaper Lady Di’s pregnancy erupted on their covers on 1984.
“Secret behind that smile … a baby!” said the front page of the Daily Mail, with a photo of a smiling Diana.
The Daily Express similarly said the “smile that says it all.”
“The September baby for the princess,” the Telegraph then reported, adding that “the queen says she is delighted.”
Diana’s pregnancy announcement was made late the day before, with the time difference allowing The Post to surpass British newspapers and publish the story on its front page on February 13 of that year.
“Mom is Princess Di’s word – again,” New York’s favorite newspaper headlined the story about the ad.
The Sun, which also celebrated the pregnancy on its front page (although it said Diana wanted a girl), suggested Monday that the Sussex may have deliberately chosen the date as a “secret assent” to the mother of Harry, who died in a car accident in August 1997.
Baby Sussex will be in eighth place on the throne, behind big brother Archie, who turns two in May, and his father Harry, 36, who is in sixth place on the throne, The Telegraph reported.
The news comes a few months after Markle spoke of his “almost unbearable pain” after suffering a miscarriage in July.
