UK variant of COVID-19 identified in Sedgwick County

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – A second case from Kansas United Kingdom or United Kingdom, variantt known as B.1.1.7, has been identified in Sedgwick County, confirmed by the Kansas Department of Health and the Environment in a Monday afternoon press release.

The first case was identified earlier this month at Fort Hays State University in Ellis County.

“A case investigation has been carried out and close contacts have been reported. The case investigation indicates that the person was probably infected while traveling out of state. No further details about the patient will be released. including demographics, ”the KDHE said.

The state said the variant was determined by testing at KDHE laboratories.

“This finding does not change our public health recommendations. We continue to encourage people to take the right precautions. This includes wearing a mask that fits snugly on the nose and face and has several layers of fabric or thinner layered masks with an additional fabric face mask to enhance fit. Kansans should also follow isolation and quarantine recommendations, practice physical removal, good hygiene, stay home if sick and receive the vaccine if possible, once the supply is sufficient, ”said the secretary of the KDHE, Dr. Lee Norman.

Sedgwick County Health Director Adrienne Byrne added that “this finding also shows the importance of testing for COVID-19.”
