Jimmy Kimmel returned Tuesday night from the holiday weekend to delve into the surprisingly dramatic, albeit ultimately anti-climate, conclusion of Donald Trump’s second impeachment trial.
“Mitch McConnell tried to have it both ways this weekend,” the host of the night began. “After voting to acquit, McConnell delivered a forceful speech condemning Trump’s actions and inaction. Basically, saying, ‘Donald Trump is guilty of all the things I just found him not guilty of.'”
Instead of giving McConnell the triumphant video treatment, Kimmel broadcast the audio of his scathing speech behind the video of a turtle eating a leaf, before joking, “It was the turtle against the crazy yellow hare.”
Then, since Trump “doesn’t have permission to tweet” and “has to write letters now,” Kimmel read aloud the seven-paragraph statement the former president posted earlier in the day. “The Republican Party can never be respected or strong again with political ‘leaders’ like Senator Mitch McConnell at the helm,” Trump said, adding, “Mitch is a tough, grumpy, non-smiling political trick, and if the Republican senators stay with him, they will not win again. “
“No smile,” Kimmel echoed. “Did Donald Trump meet his wife? Melania has not smiled since 2011 ”.
“Now, I have to say, I think Mitch McConnell blew it up,” the host continued. “This was his party’s best chance to make sure Trump didn’t run again.”
Finally, to bring the point home, he offered an analogy for viewers. “Remember the end of lord of the Rings when Frodo took the ring to the volcano and decided not to throw it? It was like a silly version of that. “
