There is a major emphasis in the Pro Days on pre-draft preparations for players and teams with the NFL combination canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. One of the Pro Days the 49ers attended was that of Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence. While San Francisco could be in the market for a signal call at the start of the project, there is no measure that could pull the No. 1 general team and Lawrence away from the Jacksonville Jaguars.
So why did they make the trip to see the perspective of the stars? The 49ers staff vice president, Adam Peters, told Matt Barrows in a fascinating look at the team’s tight preparations for this year’s draft.
“It wasn’t just Trevor Lawrence,” Peters told Barrows at Athletic. “There were a couple of (Clemson players) there. And Ethan Waugh, our college principal, lives in South Carolina. So it’s an easy journey for him. And then Steve Rubio, who is our Southeast explorer, there are a couple of other Clemson players there along with some free professional agents. ”
Peters also noted that the 49ers did the final work to close a report on Lawrence, who is sure to go to the Jaguars with the No. 1 general election.
It’s logical that the team wouldn’t want to divulge exactly who they were within reach to see, but the Tigers are a club loaded with a lot of pro-caliber talent, including runner Travis Etienne and offensive Jackson Carman. 49ers 2020 debutant Chris Finke was one of the free agents catching Lawrence balls.
While the 49ers are still planning exactly how they want to sail all Pro Days, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them appear in several of the major quarterbacks ’face-to-face workouts. General manager John Lynch has already noted that he attended Patrick Mahomes ’Pro Day as a smoke screen, but the club could also be looking at some of the main interlocutors or some of the others working that day.
Attendance at Pro Day is important, but it may not always be what it seems, as was the case with San Francisco’s presence to see Lawrence.
