SALT LAKE CITY – A woman has died after being thrown from an SUV when she drove on I-15 Wednesday, according to Utah Highway patrol officials.
Lieutenant Nick Street of the Utah Highway Patrol said the driver of the Mercedes SUV merged from the far left lane onto I-15 and attempted to exit onto the westbound I-80 junction. The driver lost control of the SUV and drove twice, coming to rest on the 500 South ramp on I-180 heading west.
The driver was thrown through the sunroof by the force of the roll and rested about 30 feet from the elevated ramp. The other occupants of the vehicle, a male passenger and two children, did not appear to be in critical condition, but were taken to hospital, Street said.
The accident was believed to be initially fatal, but the driver showed “signs of life” and was reported to be in critical condition. Street said the woman was taken to hospital, but later died from her injuries.
According to the Utah Department of Transportation, the ramp from I-15 to I-80 west is currently closed, but is estimated to open around 6:45 p.m. late.
No further information was released, including the identities of those involved.
