Some councilors and community groups are scheduled to hold a press conference on Thursday morning to question the allocation of relief funds from Mayor Lori Lightfoot.
Chicago received $ 1.2 billion from the federal government for the relief of COVID-19, more than $ 280 million was earmarked for the Chicago Police Department, according to the Chicago Tribune.
The money was used heavily for police overtime and in response to last summer’s civil unrest and to improve security during the November elections.
Other money went to other agencies, as well as to O’Hare and Midway Airports.
The group of councilors said the money should have gone to areas that needed help, such as tenants facing evictions, small businesses and public health services.
They will set out the report’s findings this morning and detail how they want Lightfoot to prioritize the next wave of funding.
The Lightfoot office has not returned the ABC7 comment request.
