Allison Janney says goodbye to her mother, as the television comedy is canceled after eight seasons

Allison Janney has said goodbye to the TV series Mom after CBS announced Thursday that it would end the sitcom this year after eight seasons.

The 61-year-old actress, who plays Bonnie in the hit, described being part of the mother as “one of the great honors of my life” in a heartfelt Instagram post shortly after.

The American program, which deals with the issue of recovering from drug and alcohol addiction, was canceled after the abrupt departure of the protagonist Anna Faris last September.

Although Faris, 44, was leaving a few days before production began, the show continued with his co-star Janney at the helm, but it had to be the show’s final season.

Allison traveled to Instagram to share an article reporting the cancellation of the show as it paid tribute to the show’s creators, writers and crew members.

The Oscar-winning actress wrote: “Being part of MOM for the last 8 years … showing the laughter, love and hope that recovery can bring has been one of the great honors of my life “.

This comes just days after Allison’s appearance on Ellen DeGeneres’ show, where she described returning “starless” to the set without Faris.

Speaking of the shocking and abrupt departure of his former co-star, he said: “Yes, it was very strange and he misses a lot. Anna is missing and her character in the program is missing.”

Janney then expressed his desire for the series to continue, even though Faris had been marketed as the star and main character of the show when it premiered in 2013.

“We’re happy she’s doing what she wants to do now and we’re even happier, so we can tell these stories about these great women in recovery,” she said, referring to the fact that the series takes place in an Alcoholics Anonymous group.

Janney continued, “And I think there are some really wonderful characters that have been established. And people like the show, so we’ll keep telling the stories as long as possible.”

Actress Mimi Kennedy, who plays Marjorie in the hit show Mom, shared an online petition initiated by fans calling for the CBS comedy to be saved after it was canceled.

Mimi Kennedy, 72, posted on her Instagram on Thursday: “The public has a voice and should not be ignored,” promising to share the Change.org petition.

Still, it’s now the end of the series ’path, despite the work done by the cast of the set and the request of the fans.

In a statement obtained by Variety, the show’s executive producers, Chuck Lorre, Gemma Baker and Nick Bakay, said: “For the past eight years, we have had the great honor of bringing these wonderful characters to life, sharing their struggles and triumphs with millions of people.of spectators every week.

“From the beginning, we set out to tell stories about the recovery from alcoholism and addiction that are rarely portrayed in a series of online comedies.”

“Whether it’s the emotional reactions from the live audience during the night of tape inside Stadium 20, or the discussions in the White House about the opioid crisis or the personal stories we continue to receive on social media , we are very proud to know that the mother has positively impacted so many lives.

“We are always grateful for our brilliant cast and our guest stars, wonderful writers and an amazing team for following this journey with us,” the statement concludes.

Created by Chuck Lorre, Eddie Gorodetsky and Gemma Baker, the mother was initially conceived as a vehicle for Faris, following her series of successful comic book roles in films, including The House Bunny and Smiley Face.

However, the program, which deals with the topic of drug and alcohol addiction recovery, has undergone much of the change over the seasons.

In the third season, it was less about the character of Faris, Christy and their children, and more of an ensemble comedy, with supporting actors Jaime Pressley, Mimi Kennedy and Beth Hall getting more screen time.

In 2018, Kristen Johnston had a big impact playing Tammy Diffendorf, Bonnie’s (Janney) foster sister who ended up in jail after trying to steal an Outback Steakhouse.

It wasn’t long before Johnston was invited to be a regular series, and the show now looks like an ensemble piece between the five actors, no doubt with Janney as the protagonist.

Meanwhile, Faris issued a statement at the time of her shock departure, saying, “The last seven years in my mother have been some of the most satisfying and rewarding of my career.”
