Belgrade’s Red Star club apologized for the ethnic abuse received by AC Milan’s Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic during the Europa League clash on Thursday.
The two clubs clashed in the Serbian capital and Ibrahimovic, a Swedish citizen of Bosnian descent, was insulted by the local crowd.
A video circulating on social media shows a man shouting a derogatory word used in Serbia for Muslims against Ibrahimovic.
“As a club, we have done everything we can to ensure that the organization of the party lives up to the two great clubs, and we will not allow a primitive individual to tarnish the traditionally known hospitality of our country and our people.” said the statement.
“Red Star, in cooperation with the relevant authorities, will find the individual in question and insist that he bear all the consequences of this behavior.”
The match ended 2-2 with the Red Star, who was left with 10 men, scoring a goal in stoppage time to secure a draw. Ibrahimovic was the replacement.
Red Star fans are known for their violent rages in the stands that often include ethnic insults against Bosnians, Croats and Kosovars, with whom Serbia waged wars during the bloody break-up of the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s. .
