The Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba issued one statement about “Homeland and Life”, the song by Yotuel, Zona People, Descemer Bé, Maykel Osorbo and El Funky that has generated quite a bit of controversy among Cubans and has particularly bothered the regime.

“With indescribable disgust, we have seen social media invaded, with the worst of attempts at musical speeches, to the alleged intention of giving public opinion the image of an artistic movement in opposition to the position of the Cuban Revolution,” says the statement issued this Friday.

The statement noted that “while it is unfortunate that a clown like this has chosen music as his language, even more unfortunate is its appearance on dates as relevant to Cuban musicians as the 94th anniversary of the birth of Juan Almeida Bosque, the 203rd anniversary of the birth of Perucho Figueredo and the 58th anniversary of the death of Benny Moré, figures who from different angles taught us that music and art in general take their toll sense and embody their greatest responsibility, when it comes to serving the Fatherland. “

The statement of the UNEAC points out that it is unfortunate and shameful that at a time when the avant-garde of the Cuban music movement is engaged in sustaining the spiritual life of our population, characters born and trained in our nation, use the their voices in function of increasing their mercenary popularity.

“The Cuban people reject them vigorously convinced that the Empire that today applauds them and tosses their coins, like Rome, pays the traitors, but despises them,” he argues.

“At the time of being shot, Major General Perucho Figueredo, author of our National Anthem, reminded us that Dying for the Fatherland is Living. That is why in the face of the ignominy of buffoons such as those who have perpetrated this offense, we reiterate once again our irreplaceable slogan: “Homeland or Death: We will win!”, culminates the statement.

In less than 72 hours of its premiere, the theme “Homeland and Life” exceeded one million views and YouTube.

There have been voices of officialdom that have maintained a critical stance against the song, which promises to be a kind of anthem for Cuba’s freedom.

Even the Cuban ruler Miguel Díaz-Canel quote an excerpt from the song Little Day Serenade, Of Silvio Rodriguez, to respond to the subject Mother country and Life, said: “Thus it is sung to the mother country”.
