The United States on Saturday reached 28,072,124 confirmed cases of covid-19 and 497,568 deaths from the disease totaling 2,098 deaths more than Friday and 100,747 new infections, according to the independent count of the Johns Hopkins University.
California is now the state hardest hit by the pandemic with 49,046 dead, followed by New York (46,703), Texas (42,032), Florida (29,813), Pennsylvania (23,540), New Jersey (22,834) and Illinois (22,426).
Other states with a large number of deaths are Ohio (16,749), Georgia (16,742), Michigan (16,342), Massachusetts (15,779) and Arizona (15,480).
In terms of infections, California is 3,525,599, followed by Texas with 2,591,564, third is Florida with 1,863,707, New York is fourth with 1,585,435 and Illinois is fifth with 1,172,736.
The provisional death toll -497,568- far exceeds the lowest level of the White House’s initial estimates, which projected at best between 100,000 and 240,000 deaths due to the pandemic.
The new president of the United States, Joe Biden, has predicted that in February more than half a million people will die and that in total more than 600,000 will die.
For its part, the Institute of Health Metrics and Assessments (IHME) of the University of Washington, in the models for predicting the evolution of the pandemic is often set by the White House, estimates that for on June 1, about 615,000 will have died.
