Thousands of families in Houston, Texas, were severely affected after the catastrophic winter storm that left much of the city without essential services and has claimed the lives of some 70 people.
The emergency mobilized several non-profit organizations, including Correa Family Foundation of the santaisabelino campocorto Carlos Correa who joined forces with his teammate in the Stars of Houston, the Venezuelan José Altuve, in contributing a total of $ 50,000 to alleviate the humanitarian crisis by distributing healthy food and water.
“It has been extremely sad to witness how our city of Houston suffers from a lack of food and water, and to see so many families with children suffering from hunger and cold. Joseph and I considered this joint effort a humble way to express the “Our commitment and gratitude to the community means so much to us. We also want to inspire many others and together be able to alleviate some of the suffering caused by this natural disaster,” Correa said in written statements.
According to the president of the organization, oncologist Ricardo Flores, the historic snowfall aggravated the living conditions of many families who, having no heating, took refuge in their respective cars to escape the freezing temperatures , causing carbon monoxide poisoning.
“What a lot of people don’t know apart from not only the cold, the snow and everything, but the biggest problem is that Houston wasn’t ready for that kind of weather and we literally go to bed on Sunday hoping it was going to get a a little cold and snowy, but when everyone got up there was several inches of snow, there was no communication, there was no cell phone, no internet, most people had no light and many people had no water, ”he explained. Flores who is the clinical director of the Texas Children Cancer Center in Woodlands.
“In my case I couldn’t get to the hospital either and really when I was able to get there all the emergencies started to come in. There have been over 600 cases of carbon monoxide poisoning because here they are not prepared and not using well carts or ovens for heating and looking for other ways to heat and poison themselves with carbon monoxide and there have been many deaths, about 60 from hypothermia and poisoning … an eight-year-old boy died frozen, “he said. lamented.
As soon as they regained essential services, these philanthropists became active in helping poor communities where many live in mobile homes, which lack food, water and electricity.
“We are reaching out to these communities and creating campaigns to help them. That’s why we created a fundraising campaign and joined other non-profit foundations because they have connections to supermarkets and restaurants and for every $ 2 we are receiving a donation, you can bring a lunch directly to the home of the children and families in need, ”he revealed.
“Today (yesterday Saturday) Carlos announced with José Altuve of the Astres that they made a donation for 25,000 meals and so the community has helped us, we have brought almost $ 60,000 that we have raised and Carlos had to travel to the Spring Training in Florida, but his parents and his wife (Daniella) stayed here and are delivering food, going directly to the communities that need it bringing food and water, ”he argued.
He said other organizations were added to the initiative such as Kid’s Meals Inc and the National Association of Christian Churches (NACC) Disaster Services, which collaborate in delivering food to both families and police and officials. publics working in the emergency.
“We’re basically delivering food every day that is the most immediate need, especially water because in much of Houston there’s no water, not even in hospitals where there’s very little pressure. Then we’re going to focus on raising funds for to be able to restore the houses because many of the houses were lost, where the pipes exploded these houses were lost and right now there are a lot of people who will be left homeless, ”the doctor advanced.
“Now we are starting to see other issues that are going to be more permanent and will need long-term help,” he noted.
Meanwhile, he urged the public to join this mission by reiterating that for every $ 2 they receive, hot food will be delivered to the home of a needy family.
“Really any monetary help will make a big difference because for every $ 2 they bring us, thanks to the connections we have, this equates to a meal arriving at the home of a needy family and right now 6,400 meals are being delivered specifically to children and obviously to adults a lot more is being delivered, ”he stressed.
