He was the president of the Mariners for inappropriate comments

Seattle Mariners Mariners president and chief executive Kevin Mather resigned Monday after a video was released in which he expressed his views on organizational strategies and his views on some players.

Mariners Board Chairman John Stanton said Mather’s comments were inappropriate and did not represent the franchise’s point of view.

Mather’s resignation is effective immediately. Stanton will serve as interim chief executive officer and team chairman on an interim basis.

“There is no excuse for what was said, and I will not try to create one,” Stanton said in a press release. “I offer my most sincere apology from the team and my partners to our players and fans. We need to be better, and act better.”

Mather apologized late Sunday for his comments, which were made Feb. 5 at the Breakfast Rotary Club in Bellevue, Washington, and were posted online over the weekend.

The video posted by the Rotary group lasts 46 minutes and touches on areas of the organization’s status when it comes to the 2021 season – many of which the Seattle head office would have preferred that they were not made public.

“We have a lot of work to do to make up for that, and that work has already begun,” Stanton said.
