TESSALONIKI, Greece (AP) – Police clashed with protesters and detained 31 people on Monday in Greece’s second largest city during a demonstration against a new campus security law.
Protesters occupied the director’s building at the University of Thessaloniki in northern Greece for several hours and clashes erupted when police entered the building to remove them.
A total of 32 people who took part in the protest received a fine of 300 euros ($ 365) each for violating the country’s blocking rules.
Earlier this month, Parliament passed center-right government legislation that allowed police to patrol university campuses. Left-wing opposition parties have called the move undemocratic and have supported ongoing protests against the new measures.
