Police on Saturday morning arrested an aspiring bank robber in West San Jose and called the bomb squad to verify a suspicious device the thief left behind, according to the police department.
At around 9:35 a.m., officers responded to the Chase Bank branch at block 1700 on Saratoga Avenue, near Westgate Mall and Saratoga Walk, about reports of an ongoing robbery. according to police.
Witnesses reported on social media that the thief was armed, but police did not immediately confirm that it was an attempted armed robbery.
One suspect was arrested at the scene and no injuries were reported, police said.
The SJPD bomb squad responded to the scene to investigate a suspicious device that the suspect left in the bank, police said. The bank was evacuated safely and the device later became safe.
The bank is located in one of the busiest areas of the city, with the two large shopping malls and several popular restaurants at the intersection of three main corridors: Saratoga Avenue, Lawrence Highway and Prospect / Campbell Road.
