A magnitude 5.3 earthquake shakes Alaska

A 5.3-magnitude earthquake shook Point MacKenzie, Alaska, on Saturday, and thousands of people in the state felt it.

The area is accustomed to earthquakes, but they are not usually of that magnitude, an official with the National Earthquake Information Center told The Hill.

So far, 2,794 people have submitted a “meaningful report” to the U.S. Geological Survey, according to data from its place.

It is unclear if anyone was injured in the quake.

Officials say there are no tsunami threats, but that there are possible aftershocks across the region.

Reports from those who felt the quake come from Point MacKenzie, Anchorage, Eagle River, Knik-Fairview and Whitehorse.

This earthquake carry on a magnitude 7.1 earthquake that struck Japan earlier this month. No tsunami occurred after the earthquake in Japan.
