SAINT ANTHONY – Asylum seekers who have been trapped in Mexico for having moths during the Trump administration are slowly allowing themselves into the United States.
Thousands of migrants were forced to wait in Mexico under the program known as Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP) that began in 2019.
A Brownsville city spokesman said Wednesday through Sunday, more than 270 asylum seekers were allowed to enter the city.
Brownsville Mayor Trey Mendez said they have been working closely with President Joe Biden’s administration.
“The priority is to get individuals who have been to this camp in Matamoros, and it will be about 700. We intend to do so in the next 10 to 14 days,” Mendez said.
The mayor said the migrants come from Cuba and different countries in Central and South America.
“When this program of the Migrant Protection Protocol was launched before that, asylum seekers could wait in the United States for their court dates. Right. To see if the court determined or not they were in fact eligible for asylum. But once the MPP was established, these people were asked to stay in Mexico, ”said Méndez.
Announcements
The mayor said people who have stayed in the camp have received medical checks before crossing.
“Once crossed, we get their information, help them make travel arrangements, and take them to their sponsor, their family as quickly as we can,” Méndez said.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security said there are approximately 25,000 people in the MPP program with active cases.
“Without a doubt, this administration is very different from the previous one. And as I said, we will see over time how this new policy works, but I am sure we will see very positive changes, ”Mendez said.
