Views of China and Russia at record lows: Gallup

According to a new poll, Americans’ views on China and Russia have worsened to low levels.

Only 20% of Americans surveyed give China a favorable rating, according to the Gallup poll released early Monday, which represents a 13 percentage point drop in favor compared to 33% a year ago. Last year’s result had been the lowest since the late 1990s and tied for a record low following the Chinese government’s crackdown on protesters in Tiananmen Square.

On the party line, Republican favorability toward China fell 13 percentage points to 10%, while that of Democrats fell 8 points to 27%.

When it comes to Russia, 77 percent of all respondents indicated that they now have an unfavorable opinion about the country. On the other hand, 25 percent of Republicans surveyed said they had a somewhat favorable view of Russia, and 18 percent of Democratic respondents agreed.

Since last year, Russia’s image has declined among independents, Gallup noted, with a 12-point drop to 24 percent. The views of Republicans and Democrats were relatively unchanged over the same period of time.

The Gallup survey was conducted from February 3 to 18 with a random sample of 1,021 adults. It has a sampling error of 4 percentage points.
