Rosetta can be removed from Mac M1 in some regions in macOS 11.3

Installing the next macOS 11.3 software update on a Mac M1 may cause Rosetta 2 to be removed in one or more regions of the world.

In the third beta version of macOS 11.3 created today for developers to test, MacRumors contributor Steve Moser discovered new strings in the beta code stating that “Rosetta will be removed when you install this update “. Another new channel says “Rosetta is no longer available in this region. Applications that require Rosetta will no longer run.”

Apple did not specify which regions where Rosetta 2 “would no longer be available” and no further details are known at this time.

Rosetta 2 allows Apple-powered silicon Macs like the M1 chip to run x86 applications created for an Intel-based Mac. The translation layer runs in the background when a user opens a Mac-only compiled application with an Intel processor and automatically translates the application for use with Apple Silicon the first time the application is run.

It’s not clear why macOS 11.3 can remove Rosetta 2 on Macs M1 in some regions, but there may be legal or copyright reasons. Apple did not immediately respond to our request for feedback, but we will provide you with an update if we receive any news.

The third beta of macOS 11.3 also adds some new configuration options with images to assign game controller buttons to keyboard layouts, according to Moser code-level findings, but we’re not entirely sure what that entails.
