Check your emails: You may have an invitation for the upcoming main beta of PlayStation 4. According to MP1st, Sony is sending codes for a system software update scheduled for release sometime in the spring. With the PS5 already available, this is less complete than previous PS4 firmware updates, though it does include some worthwhile quality of life tweaks.
For example, you can now turn off message notifications for the groups you belong to and request to join friends’ games. Also, if you’ve “hidden” a game from your profile, your friends will no longer be able to see you’re playing it. This is something we could have done before the generation, to be honest, as some review embargoes stipulate that we need to appear offline.
Perhaps the most important change is the elimination of the Communities function, which is being discontinued. There are no changes to the controversial new Party system, although Sony did admit that it was exploring improvements after getting some robust feedback last year. Did you receive a beta invitation?
