Villanova’s Collin Gillespie wins with a “serious” left knee injury; Thursday, MRI

Villanova top manager Collin Gillespie pulled out the Wildcats ’No. 10 win by 72-60 at Creighton Wednesday night with what coach Jay Wright called a“ serious ”knee injury.

Gillespie landed uncomfortably during a 6-minute play, remaining 38 seconds into the first half and immediately grabbed his left leg. He tried to walk down the baseline after the play, but then left the bench and had to be helped into the locker room.

The school announced at the break that Gillespie was out of the game with a left knee injury.

“It’s serious,” Wright said when asked about the injury during his post-game interview with FS1. “We don’t know exactly what it is. But it’s serious.”

Wright later said during his post-game press conference that Gillespie will undergo an MRI on Thursday morning.

Junior wing Brandon Slater started the second half instead of Gillespie and finished with 11 points when the Wildcats closed out the Big East regular season title.

Gillespie has been Wright’s team starter for the past three years after playing a key role on the bench for the 2018 Villanova national championship team. This season he averages 14.4 points, 3 , 3 rebounds and 4.7 assists this season, shooting 37.4% from 3 points away. .
