A Honduran who according to immigration authorities was twice deported from the United States will go to jail for raping and killing a Peruvian woman who was exercising in a park in New Jersey.
A judge on Thursday sentenced Jorge Rius, 35, a Jersey City resident to 30 years in prison for the 2019 attack on 45-year-old Carolina Cano in Liberty Park. The judge also imposed a 10-year sentence on him that will be executed simultaneously for sexual assault with aggravating circumstances.
According to Hudson County prosecutors, Rius admitted to sexually assaulting and strangling Cano. She had been living in the United States for about two years and worked as a babysitter.
Police found his body in the park lake.
Rius, a native of Honduras, entered the United States illegally and was deported in 2003 and 2004, said Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials.
