These are the main movements that have taken place on Norwegian Cruise Line since March 2020:
Not affected order book
In May, Norwegian said delays in deliveries of new construction were expected due to the effects of COVID-19 on shipyards. So far, however, none of the company’s new ships have been officially rolled back.
After receiving the Norwegian Encore in 2019, the company’s displacement capacity growth strategy saw its next new construction scheduled for delivery in 2022, with the first ship of the Leonardo project, which is one of six.
They don’t sell boats
Norwegian has not sold any vessels outside its fleet during the pandemic.
Commenting on the issue, the CEO of Norwegian Cruise Line Holding said his company already has a young fleet and no sales are planned.
Healthy sailing panel with Royal Caribbean
In July, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings partnered with the Royal Caribbean Group to create improved safety and health standards on cruises. According to the company, the new protocols were planned in response to the global COVID-19 pandemic and would get ready for the safe resumption of operations.
Together, the companies created a group of experts, called the “Healthy Sail Panel”.
In September, they unveiled a more than 65-page report detailing 74 best practices for protecting the public health and safety of guests, crew and the communities where cruise ships call.
Ships in dry dock
While some major dry dock projects were suspended amid the pandemic, Norwegian took advantage of the operational break to send ships to the shipyard.
At least seven vessels in the fleet have been berthed since March 2020, including the Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway.
The ships saw major work in France, which included large deck and cabin equipment, the installation of scrubbers, and new propellers.
In December, the company also announced a partnership with AtmosAir Solutions to install continuous disinfection air purification systems throughout the fleet. Filters must be installed before ships can operate again.
Norwegian is currently planning to resume service in June, with all crossings canceled until 31 May.
