The legendary American investor was worth $ 100 billion on Thursday, according to the Bloomberg Billionaire’s Index. This places him in the company of about five more men above this threshold. And now he’s the sixth richest person in the world, standing just behind Facebook (FB) CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
Buffett, 90, has added nearly $ 13 billion to his net worth this year as shares of his industrial and insurance conglomerate have increased. Berkshire Hathaway (BRKA) increases by almost 15% in 2021, representing a market capitalization of more than $ 600 billion.
Buffett and Berkshire Hathaway are famous for investing primarily in slow-growing “value” stocks, many of which have gone very well this year as markets continue to recover from the shock caused by the pandemic a year ago. It recently revealed that Berkshire had bought stakes in components from Dow, Chevron and Verizon, indicating a new interest in Big Oil, telecommunications and media.
Chevron (CLC) it increases by 31% as crude oil prices regain the ground they lost during the first months of the pandemic. Verizon (VZ) it has not gone very well (shares have fallen almost 3% this year), but it is still above the lows it reached in March 2020.
Even though Buffett has surpassed $ 100 billion, he is still far behind the richest person in the world, Amazon (AMZN) CEO Jeff Bezos, worth $ 180 billion, according to Bloomberg. Bezos has been negotiating the title with Tesla (TSLA) CEO Elon Musk, who is now worth $ 173 billion as shares of his electric vehicle manufacturers rally for the recent losses.
Microsoft (MSFT) co-founder Bill Gates is No. 3 on the list with $ 138 billion, while Bernard Arnault, chairman of the luxury goods group LVMH (LVMHF), ranks No. 4 with $ 122 billion. Arnault is the richest non-American on the list. Zuckerberg is number 5 with a net worth of $ 101 billion.
Buffett has given billions of dollars to philanthropic causes and, in 2006, pledged to donate almost all of his fortune to charity.
