If the Mets aren’t able to close it out with an extension, Francisco Lindor could find out next low season exactly where he is among the game’s best short stops.
Meanwhile, the new Mets superstar believes he already knows the answer.
“Generally? Me, “Lindor told Sports Illustrated when asked who the best short is.” Because I’ll do it every day. I count on myself every day. Every day. Trevor Story? I love watching it. Let’s talk. The best hands in the shortstop position right now are Freddy Galvis and Andrelton Simmons. [Corey] Seager is at his level, I think he’s the best hitter.
“If we go tool by tool, many are better than me. [Fernando] Tatis [Jr.]? It’s incredible. I [Javier] Báez? I’ve been playing against Baez since I was older and he was asking me, “Bro, how are you doing this?”
“There is this good balance between having confidence and being arrogant. Sometimes it’s hard for me to admit to myself who the best short is. Because? Because of this fine balance. I’m sure. I think I’m the best short. ”
The Mets hope to sign Lindor to an overtime before he can become a free agent next winter, after negotiating with him and Carlos Carrasco on a deal with the Indians in January.
But if Lindor hits the open market, it would join a class of free agent short stars, which is expected to include Seager, Story, Baez and Carlos Correa.
For now, 27-year-old Lindor, four-time All-Star, two-time Gold Glove and two-time Silver Slugger, is gearing up for the 2021 season, the first in a Mets uniform after a year low during the short 2020.
