The Assads were in “stable condition” and planned to isolate themselves for two to three weeks, according to the statement.

Syria has reported at least 45,879 positive Covid-19 cases and 2,023 total deaths based on the cumulative number of multiple local medical authorities, but it has been difficult to get a full picture of the outbreak in the country.

Damascus received its first vaccine shipment on March 1 from an unnamed “friendly” country, according to Syria’s state news agency. The name and quantities of the vaccines were not mentioned in the statement.

Other territories in Syria, including rebel and Kurdish sites, have not yet received vaccines.

Assad has been repeatedly accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity during the Syrian war for a decade. His Damascus government has denied the charges.

The wife of the British-born Syrian president is a well-known figure who has sided with Assad throughout the civil war. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2018 and has since recovered.
