An Army reservist who looted the Capitol during the Jan. 6 riot was known to be a white supremacist who made anti-Semitic statements during his time at a New Jersey naval facility, prosecutors revealed Friday. .
Timothy Hale-Cusanelli, who was a security contractor at Earle Naval Arms Station and was aware of top-level intelligence, was arrested in January and described at the time as a “white supremacist. declared a Nazi sympathizer. However, prosecutors filed a lawsuit Friday in court filing details of interviews with 44 of his colleagues underscoring the breadth of their fanatical beliefs.
A Navy non-commissioned officer testified that the defendant was constantly talking about Jews and recalled that the defendant said “Hitler should have finished the job,” prosecutors wrote in the presentation, which sought to argue the continuation of the arrest of Hale-Cusanelli while awaiting trial.
One interviewee claimed that Hale-Cusanelli had “extremist or radical views related to the Jewish people, minorities and women” and another said he expressed hatred of Jews every day.
Prosecutors also exposed details of the contents of his personal phone, which they said contained anti-Semitic and racist content as part of his “fantasy of participating in another civil war.”
Hale-Cusanelli’s lawyer argued that he deserved pre-trial release and was not a white supremacist, but prosecutors ignored that argument, noting the amount of comments he made to his colleagues and his phone.
The latest presentation highlights the participation of white supremacists in the January 6 insurgency, which tried unsuccessfully to stop certification of the results of the 2020 Electoral College’s presidential election.
Several far-right groups are known to have been involved in the insurgency and the video shows several riot police launching racist comments. A Confederate flag was also seen waving across the Capitol once insurgents broke into the building.
Hale-Cusanelli’s involvement also highlights the work of political leaders trying to uproot the white supremacism of the Armed Forces.
