House Speaker Nancy Pelosi acknowledged on Sunday the crisis surrounding the rise of children crossing the southern border, but blamed the Biden administration for inheriting a “broken system” from former President Donald Trump.
“The facts are this: there are more children. About 600, 700 more children, unaccompanied children, who arrive at the border. This is a humanitarian challenge for all of us, “Pelosi (D-California) told” This Week “on ABC News.
“What the administration has inherited is a broken system at the border and they are working to correct this in the interest of the children,” he said.
But Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) Said the blame for the border crisis lies solely on President Biden’s lap and said the president’s policies invite migrants to make the dangerous trip to the United States.
Asked by “Fox News Sunday” Chris Wallace, host of whether Biden is responsible for the increase in migrants and the number of apprehensions, said Cassidy: “Empirically, it’s completely.”
“When people think they can come in, they start sending their unaccompanied child to Mexico, where they can be kidnapped and trafficked,” Cassidy said, alleging that immigration officials told immigrants the Spaniards that the border it was “open.”
“There can be no mistakes when it comes to someone who is thinking of joining a caravan,” he added.
More than 29,000 unaccompanied minors crossed the border in February, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and the number of people detained on the Mexican border rose to more than 100,000 last month, 28% more than in January.
The total of one month of children arriving at the border is almost as high as the number of children throughout the past year.
The influx of immigrants arriving at the border has overwhelmed federal immigration authorities so much that Biden authorized the Federal Emergency Management Agency to “help receive, shelter and transport children” for the next 90 days.
Pelosi praised the move to involve FEMA.
“I am so pleased that the president, as a temporary measure, has sent FEMA to the border in order to make it easier for children to move from one, the matter of 72 hours to where they are cared for, as they are transferred to family homes. or houses that are safe, ”he said.
“So again, this is a transition from what was wrong before to what is right,” Pelosi added.
Biden has been criticized by Republicans for withdrawing many of Trump’s immigration regulations, including the “Stay in Mexico” policy that required Central American asylum seekers to stay in Mexico while U.S. courts The United States was reviewing its claims.
