Happy Pine Day, fellow nerds! The annual celebration of the mathematical constant π or pi, also known as the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter (and here I thought I would never have a chance to use 9th degree geometry in life real!). It falls on March 14 because pine written numerically is 3.14 … and then it goes on forever because irrational numbers just roll that way.

In observation of this pseudo-holiday, Google hid a little nerdy Easter egg on Chrome’s calculator. To do this, search “Pi”, “pi day” or simply “calculator” on Google. You should see some stars twinkling around a pine symbol at the top left. When you click on it, it causes a kind of “Simon Says” game, except with pine digits: the calculator briefly shows you the first three digits of pine, and if you get enter all digits correctly, then it does the same for the first four pine digits, then the first five digits, etc., etc. We played a bit, which you can see in the gif below.

The calculator even records your “highest score,” which I think is pretty adorable, which won’t lie. It reminds me of your old CoolMath4Kids days.

Presumably, Google’s pi calculator game would continue ad infinitum as the pi itself, but we have yet to prove this theory. Feel free to check it out for yourself and let us know what you find out in the comments.
