699 more cases of COVID-19, 5 deaths and 27K vaccines were reported in Utah on Wednesday

SALT LAKE CITY – The number of COVID-19 cases in Utah rose Wednesday by 699, with five more deaths and 27,654 more vaccines, according to the Utah Department of Health.

Four of the deaths occurred before Feb. 17, but were still being investigated by the state medical office, the health department said.

The health department estimates that there are 11,550 active cases of COVID-19 in Utah. According to the health department, the average number of positive cases per day seven days a day is 499. The percentage of positive tests per day for this time period communicated with the “people on people” method is now 8, 3%. The positive seven-day test rate calculated using the “test over test” method is now 4.1%.

There are currently 180 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Utah, including 63 in intensive care, according to state data. Approximately 73% of intensive care beds in Utah are occupied, including about 75% of ICU beds in the state’s 16 reference hospitals. About 52 percent of non-ICU hospital beds are now occupied in Utah, according to state data.

A total of 1,054,727 doses of vaccine have been administered in the state, up from 1,027,073 on Tuesday. A total of 696,178 Utahns have received at least one dose of vaccine and 384,054 have been fully vaccinated. As of Wednesday, 1,250,160 total doses of vaccine had been shipped to Utah.

The new figures indicate an increase of 0.2% in positive cases since Tuesday. Of the 2,307,238 people tested so far to detect COVID-19 in Utah, 16.5% tested positive for the disease. The number of tests conducted since the pandemic began is now 4,049,577, an increase of 19,892 since Tuesday. Of these, 8,666 were tests of people who had not been tested for COVID-19, according to the health department.

The five deaths reported on Wednesday were:

  • A woman from Salt Lake County who was over 85 and living in a long-term care center
  • A San Juan County man who was between 45 and 64 years old and resided in a long-term care center
  • A Utah County woman who was between 65 and 84 years old and resided in a long-term care center
  • A Washington County man who was between 65 and 84 years old and resided in a long-term care center
  • A Weber County woman who was between 65 and 84 years old and resided in a long-term care center

Wednesday’s total gives Utah 379,780 confirmed cases, with 15,198 hospitalizations and 2,037 deaths from the disease. According to the Department of Health, it is estimated that a total of 366,193 cases of COVID-19 will be recovered in Utah.

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox is scheduled to provide a pandemic update at 10 a.m. Thursday during his monthly press conference with PBS Utah.
