Cuban musician Hugo Antonio Morejón Gómez, trombonist of the popular orchestra Els Van Van, died this Saturday in Havana at the age of 64 due to a heart attack.
The news was announced on the wall of ‘Formell and Els Van Van’ on Facebook.
“And with this closing agreement, we said goodbye to great monster Hugo, excellent musician, friend and family man, today we are in Dol and we are sure that you will continue to be the star that now from heaven you will take care of the orchestra and the your loved ones. We love you. Always, ”was the comment on the post.
Morejón has been with Los Van Van since 1984, after going through other popular music groups such as Pacho Alonso and Adalberto Álvarez, and the rock group Els Dada.
Born on April 20, 1956 in the Cuban capital, he was also a keyboardist and arranger.
According to the user’s Facebook account ‘The Best Salseros in the World’, he was “a major creative force in the music of Los Van Van”, creator of “many of the wonderful horn mambos that are a big part of the sound of ‘The Train’ “.
“He’s also a consummate keyboardist and has played many memorable synth solos for Los Van Van,” the information states.
At the age of seven Morejón Gómez moved to Matanzas, where he received classes from Rafael Somavilla. In 1970 he returned to Havana to study at the National School of Art (ENA). There he trained for six years until he began his professional life.
On social media, friends and followers have expressed their grief over his sudden death and offered their condolences to his family, especially to his widow, Eloisa Maria Lipuzcua Verdecia.
In recent times the Van Van have suffered losses of people closely related to the orchestra.

In January 2020 he died at the age of 82 on flutist Orlando Cantó, one of its founders.
Baptized by the singer Pedrito Calvo as ‘El vell espigó’ and ‘Flauta major’, Cantó had been part of the group since its creation in 1969 until 1995.
