“Katherine embodied the joy and energy that makes surfing so special and loved by all of us, as a world ambassador for the sport,” the ISA said of the surfer, whose brother, José Díaz, is the president of the Salvadoran Surfing Federation (FESASURF).
“He excelled at the level of international competition, proudly representing his country at both the ISA World Surfing Games and the ISA World Junior Surfing Championship.
“We send our deepest condolences to the family of Katherine, the surfers of El Salvador, and to all those in the international surfing community who touched on life.”
FESASURF, ISA and the National Sports Institute of El Salvador did not respond to CNN’s request for comment.
