Starbucks aims to reduce water consumption in the coffee supply by 2030

Starbucks Corp. SBUX,
+ 1.35%
said on Monday that it will halve water use in its supply chain by 2030 by taking several steps, including the purchase of 600 “green factories” that have reduced water consumption by 80% in places like Guatemala and Mexico where they have settled; and improvements in the water processing machinery and technology it already possesses. By 2030, the chain also aims to achieve the goal of carbon-free green coffee by 2030. Starbucks will equip farmers with tools that will reduce fertilizer use; to promote varieties that are resistant to climate and rust, which will allow more coffee to be produced in the same amount of land; and to promote and restore the forests affected by the cafeteria, starting with Peru and Colombia. Starbucks shares have gained 85.9% over the past year, beating the S&P 500 SPX index,
+ 0.66%
which has increased by 70.6% during the period.
