Nearly a hundred Central American and Cuban migrants were detained by Chinese authorities Mexico after arriving at the airport in the northern city of Monterrey without documents proving his regular stay in the country, the government reported on Saturday.

Agents from the National Migration Institute (INM) on Friday identified 70 Hondurans, 14 Guatemalans, 6 Salvadorans and five Cubans who arrived at Monterrey, New Leon International Airport – a state bordering the United States – in two. commercial flights. One, coming from Villahermosa, Tabasco, while the other came from Cancun, Quintana Roo, two southeastern states.

The majority (72 of the 95) apparently arrived in 27 family groups “of between two and five members each,” the Interior Ministry (Interior), on which the INM depends, said in a statement.

Eight members of the group are unaccompanied minors – four from Honduras, three from El Salvador and one from Guatemala – and were under the tutelage of the state System for the Integral Development of the Family, which will also serve and will house the 27 families, the secretariat added.

The remaining 15 adults, three women and 12 men, were taken to a migration station in Nuevo León to begin the process of returning to their countries of origin.

The flow of undocumented immigrants trying to reach the border of Mexico with the United States has increased since the beginning of President Joe Biden’s administration in January, which has been dismantling some of the policies implemented by the Donald Trump administration.

Thousands of people, mostly Central Americans, have flown back to the border hoping to cross and seek asylum, alleging the poverty and violence they suffer in their home countries.

Data from the U.S. Bureau of Customs and Border Protection indicate that in February alone 100,000 people were caught trying to enter that country illegally.

The government of Mexico, Meanwhile, has tightened surveillance on its border with Guatemala to prevent the passage of undocumented people trying to reach the United States alone, after identifying 4,180 Central American minors traveling irregularly since January.
