Why can a small percentage of people still get COVID-19 after being completely vaccinated?

DETROIT – As millions of people are completely vaccinated, we begin to hear cases where some still have COVID-19 afterwards.

This is what it really means about vaccines.

Some people may feel discouraged from getting vaccinated after hearing these stories.

It is really important for everyone to understand that these vaccines are highly effective, but they do not guarantee 100% protection. This is the case for all vaccines.

Because of this, there will be a small percentage of people who still receive COVID-19 after being completely vaccinated, but that doesn’t mean the vaccine won’t help them.

Ariel Silver is a busy mother and sales manager for a medical device company.

He jumped at the chance to get vaccinated.

“From what I read it was like a 95% efficiency. So I thought I was good, ”Silver said.

He received his second shot from Pfizer in mid-January and continued to follow the recommended precautions.

“I definitely wore masks, I distanced myself socially. I was still very careful “, he added.

But when her two daughters fell ill with COVID-19 in late February shortly afterwards, she also fell ill.

“After being completely vaccinated for six weeks and then getting a positive COVID test, I was amazed. I have read that if someone is vaccinated with COVID, they are usually very mild symptoms. But for two days my symptoms were not at all mild. I was in bed, very ill, “he said.

It is not unexpected. In the Pfizer trial, eight people in the vaccinated group had a symptomatic case of COVID-19, but compared with 162 in the placebo group.

For Moderna, 11 vaccinated people still captured COVID-19 versus 185 in the placebo group.

And for Johnson and Johnson, 32 of the vaccinated group became ill compared to 112 who did not receive the vaccine.

“We should not be surprised that some people are still infected, especially if they have high-risk exposures, such as a domestic exposure. However, what we should not expect are serious infections because we know that vaccines are very protective against hospitalizations, ”a doctor told Local 4 News.

Silver feels good again and still encourages others to get vaccinated.

“The data shows that vaccines are safe and really help protect against COVID-19. I could only imagine not having the vaccine and getting COVID and the worst it would be. I think it protected me from hospitalization. and may God not guard his death, “he said.

Ultimately, all three vaccines are highly effective in preventing people from suffering from serious illness, need to be hospitalized, or die.
