Apple removes “Siri Remote” mentions in tvOS 14.5 Beta, renames button “Start”

Apple today released the fifth beta version of tvOS 14.5, and there are some small but notable changes in the update found for MacRumors collaborator Steve Moser. Apple removes mentions of “Siri remote control” and replaces them with “Apple TV remote control” in the operating system.

The ‌Siri‌ remote has always been the ‌Apple TV‌ remote in countries where ‌Siri‌ functionality is not available on ‌Apple TV‌, but now Apple uses the ‌Apple TV‌ Remote wording in countries where the ‌Siri‌ Remote remote was previously known.

This might just be a general cleanup of the language, as there is no real need to refer to it as ‌Siri‌ Remote, but it does suggest that the next-generation TVApple nextApple TV remote will not be called ‌Siri‌ Remote and will have a simpler name.

It is rumored that Apple will work on a new version of the “Apple TV” to be released this year and will be accompanied by an updated remote control with Find My features. Little else is known about the remote control at this time.

tvOS 14.5 also changes the name of the “Home Button” in the “Remote Controls and Devices” section to “TV Button”, but the functionality is the same and can be configured to go to the Apple TV application or screen of start. This could also be an adjustment for a future remote control.

Earlier betas have introduced compatibility with the latest PlayStation and Xbox drivers, as well as modifying frame rate options, with Apple now offering 29.97Hz and 59.94Hz instead of 30Hz / 60Hz.

There is also an optional “Type in ‌Siri‌” accessibility feature that can be enabled, which reflects the Type in ‌Siri‌ feature on iOS devices, a new option to choose “Other wireless speakers” as the default audio output and settings in the Podcasts app to adjust it to changes made to iOS 14.5.
