Fully vaccinated people can still get COVID, but it’s pretty rare, according to a couple of studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
By numbers: A study released Tuesday found that only four of 8,121 fully vaccinated employees at the University of Texas Southwest Medical Center in Dallas became infected.
- Another study found that seven of 14,990 vaccinated health workers at Los Angeles hospitals tested positive.
- Some of the positive health workers showed mild symptoms, but some were asymptomatic, suggesting the vaccines were protective, Francesca Torriani, the study’s lead researcher, told the New York Times.
What they say: “Currently, there is no evidence that COVID-19 occurs after vaccination due to changes in the virus,” CDC spokeswoman Kristen Nordlund told Axios.
- “Based on what we know about vaccines for other diseases and the first data from clinical trials, experts believe that getting a vaccine against COVID-19 can also help you avoid serious diseases, even if you have COVID-19.” .
