Voting rights groups filed a lawsuit Thursday night just hours after Georgia enacted a law drafted by Republicans that gives state lawmakers more power over elections and imposes a series of new voting restrictions.
The 35-page complaint filed in the Atlanta federal court alleges that minority voters will be especially affected by the new legislation, which plaintiffs say illegally suppress voters ’rights in violation of constitutional protections and the 1965 voting rights.
According to the lawsuit, the new restrictions are “clearly intended and will have the effect of hindering the participation of legitimate Georgian voters in state elections,” he added, adding that the measure will impose “unjustifiable burdens” that disproportionately affect people of color, as well as young, poor, and disabled voters.
The lawsuit was filed shortly after the governor. The Republican-controlled State General Assembly gave final approval to the measure in an online party vote Thursday.
Democrats won crucial victories in recent Georgia races, both in 2020 and earlier this year.
