A pedestrian woman was hit by an Amtrak train and killed near Santa Barbara on Friday afternoon, according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office.
According to emergency radio traffic, witnesses saw a person jump from an overpass of the train on Hollister Avenue, near Modoc Road, to the train path, but could not be confirmed. immediately.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, said Sheriff’s spokesman Raquel Zick.
The incident involved an Amtrak Coast Starlight train heading north.
Santa Barbara County firefighters, sheriff’s deputies and an AMR ambulance responded to the scene at 1:13 p.m.
According to the head of the Santa Barbara County Fire Battalion, Daniel Bertucelli, train traffic in the area was stopped.
The victim’s name was not released pending notification from relatives.
Law enforcement continued to investigate the incident, Bertucelli said.
