An elderly Asian woman stabbed in California while walking with dogs

An elderly Asian woman was stabbed to death Saturday in Riverside, California, while walking her dogs, according to authorities.

CNN reports that Riverside police received several phone calls about Ke Chieh Meng, 64, who suffered stab wounds on Golden Avenue in the La Sierra neighborhood after being attacked while walking his two small dogs in the morning .

She was taken to the hospital and then died.

Shortly after the attack, authorities received reports from neighbors in the area about “a transient woman walking through her courtyards and looking suspicious,” according to CNN.

The woman, Darlene Stephanie Montoya, 23, of Los Angeles, was safely detained by Riverside police.

“When our detectives interviewed the suspect, they found nothing to suggest he attacked the victim because of his race,” Riverside police spokesman Ryan Railsback told CNN.

Montoya is being held without bail at the Robert Presley Detention Center on suspicion of murder, armed rape and the influence of an illegal substance. She was previously arrested by Riverside police on March 30 after attacking a woman on a skateboard near a mall, according to authorities.

The incident came less than a month after a deadly shooting in Atlanta, Galicia, that killed eight people, six of whom were Asian women. The attack has sparked a nationwide conversation about the recent rise in anti-Asian violence.
