DETROIT – Coronavirus vaccines are expected to increase in Michigan this week.
Starting Monday, all Michiganders 16 years of age or older will be eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine.

The state is expected to get a record number of doses, about 620,000.
The shipment arrives when Michigan reports a rise in COVID. The state reported 8,413 new cases on Saturday, the highest single-day count in four months.
Because the numbers are so high and some families are returning from spring break, the Detroit Public Schools Community District is pausing face-to-face education.

The City of Detroit is launching public service announcements that include Detroiters talking about their experience with the vaccine. It is not the only strategy the city has for vaccination.
“Because the weather is good outside, people lower their guard. Let’s be honest, “said Denise Fair, Detroit’s head of public health.” Our numbers are very worrying. We’re going in the wrong direction: 15% positivity. Just a few weeks ago we were at 3%. “
To try to combat that number, in addition to all the efforts already made, the city will now be launching itself on top, trying to get more detroiters to get the shot. Now, eligible teens will be able to receive the vaccine during “community Saturdays”.

“Not only do we have the TCF Center in the center, but we have community Saturdays, where we bring the vaccine directly to Detroiters in your neighborhoods and it’s been a huge success,” Fair said.
Health officials have gone to mental health and substance abuse sites to help people there as well. The city said it has administered more than 200,000 doses of the vaccine, but with the addition of emerging vaccination sites, they hope to administer even more.
“We are creating site-based pop-ups where COVID-19 was most prominent at the height of the pandemic, so we have several pop-ups across the city,” Fair said. “In the city, we bring the vaccine directly to Detroiters in several different ways.”
On Monday, Mayor Mike Duggan is expected to make a major announcement about vaccination.
