Prisoners at an Oklahoma City prison took a guard hostage, beat him and stabbed him several times before one of the suspects was shot dead, according to a graphic video.
Imminent images of the March 27 hostage situation at the Oklahoma County Detention Center show that 34-year-old prisoner Curtis Montrell Williams was shot dead while holding a makeshift knife in the officer’s neck. of arrest Daniel Misquez.
Míquez, who was tied up and held captive for about an hour, is seen in surveillance material hit in the head and stabbed several times in the leg by a second inmate.
Oklahoma City Police Chief Wade Gourley told reporters Friday in the press release Friday, The Oklahoman reported.
Chaos erupted after inmates complained about prison conditions, alleging they had no running water and were not fed, KFOR reported.
“It simply came to our notice then [Williams] he puts the hostage on his knees in front of me and continues to hold that knife to that throat and that is what the officers face when they enter, ”Gourley told reporters in the images.
Officers who shot Williams during the incident, that was broadcast live on social media – have been identified as Lieutenant Coy Gilbert and Officer Kevin Kuhlman. Both remain on administrative leave while the investigation continues, Gourley said.
Protesters outside the police department on Friday called for Gourley to be fired for the incident, as Williams’ relatives claimed he was killed for seeking better conditions in prison.
“I met Curtis for 34 years and I know for sure that he would not just go out and kidnap anyone,” his mother, Rhonda Lambert, told The Oklahoman last week. “Prison conditions caused my son and so many others like him to lose control of himself.”
Lambert said Gourley should resign for his treatment of the incident and asked Gilbert and Kuhlman to face criminal charges.
A former inmate recently incarcerated in prison told the newspaper that inmates regularly deal with insecurity, as well as cockroaches and bedbugs.
“They got three men in a two-man cell, people were sleeping on the floor,” the inmate said. “Some toilets don’t flow or don’t have hot water … I told my people I had to start talking [reporters] in the news “.
Marquez was treated at a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries after being rescued, prison officials said. Meanwhile, Gourley rejects calls to resign.
“I haven’t seen anything that drives it,” Gourley said.
