Biden is also expected to announce that the United States has administered 150 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine, the official confirmed, putting the president on track to meet or exceed his goal of administering 200 million doses in his first 100 days in office.
CNN first reported on the announcements scheduled for Biden on Tuesday. The president is scheduled to visit a vaccination site at Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, Virginia on Tuesday afternoon before returning to the White House to rule on the status of vaccinations.
Biden said during his first speech in the early hours last month that he would urge states to make sure all adults can receive a coronavirus vaccine before May 1st. Biden said earlier that 90 percent of adults would be eligible by April 19th.
The new goal comes when the U.S. is constantly increasing the number of vaccines daily. The Biden administration announced over the weekend that the U.S. reached 4 million doses for the first time in a 24-hour period.
About a dozen states have already allowed anyone 16 years of age or older to register and receive a coronavirus vaccine, and there are likely to be more states doing so in the coming days as vaccine supplies become more more available. Biden’s announcement is likely to put pressure on states that have moved more slowly to open up vaccine appointments to a wide range of adults.
Biden has repeatedly set achievable goals in its effort to address the pandemic, such as its initial goal of administering 100 million doses of coronavirus vaccine during its first 100 days in office, which some health experts felt were not aggressive enough. Biden doubled that target to 200 million shots late last month as his administration worked to increase vaccine production.
While Biden expects all adults to be able to receive vaccines within 13 days, states and cities will take longer to administer them to the public. The Biden administration is also faced with a way to address vaccination hesitation and convince those who are wary of inoculations to receive them so that the American population can achieve herd immunity.
The Biden administration is investing $ 10 billion in expanding access to vaccines and increasing uptake in underserved communities. Last week, Vice President Harris announced a new grassroots network tasked with increasing confidence in vaccines in his communities.
