Now, I was not a federal employee. Most of NASA is not. NASA has a big name, but it is a small agency and most are contractors. Federal employees manage these contractors and agency programs. Federal employees are the backbone of the primarily private sector agency that puts rockets and people into space and conducts research on aeronautics. This is the name: National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

In this name there is nothing about the management of children at the border. Not a thing. If any of the federal officials had been asked to volunteer for frontier work when I was at Hubble, all the contractors would have heard of it.

But here we are. The Biden administration on the first day irresponsibly opened the border. Hundreds of thousands of immigrants have crossed it illegally. There are at least 18,000 children housed in some type of overcrowded facility. Border towns are overflowing. The federal government is so overwhelmed that it is now seeking to remove space program personnel, managers, and strange astronauts and rocket scientists from their important job at one of the smaller federal agencies to deal with this disaster at the border.

Biden’s administration is on the flop. He is now trying to blame Trump, but migrants do not wear MAGA hats. Porten “Biden Please Let Us In!” shirts and telling all the reporters who came because Biden told them so.

Trump left Biden a pretty neat border. They are designed for real rocket and launch research, they are designed to build satellites in clean rooms, they are designed for aeronautical or other research, or they are academic and office buildings. What part of that says “Let’s look for a group of migrant children here”?

The people at NASA aren’t designed for that either. They are program staff, top level managers and physicists and the like. These are very smart people who do amazing things, but mass daycare in convention centers and tent cities is a long way from “other assigned tasks.” Or even volunteers, in this case.
