The New York Times reported that Gaetz was being investigated by the Justice Department (DOJ) following an alleged relationship with a 17-year-old girl and a possible violation of sex trafficking laws. Gaetz has denied any wrongdoing.

Gaetz has claimed that he and his family were the target of an extortion plan by a former DOJ official, although that official has denied the allegation.

The Republican Party lawmaker has acquired legal representation amid the DOJ investigation and has indicated that he has no plans to step down.

Trump appeared to defend Gaetz in a statement earlier this week, stressing that the Florida Republican “has completely denied the allegations against him.”
